Moisture-related conditions are commonly attributed to installation error based on visible symptoms, despite the fact that substrate moisture levels are typically established prior to installation.<\/span><\/p>

Where elevated moisture or active vapor transmission is present, the long-term performance of the tile assembly may be affected regardless of installation technique.<\/p>

Moisture Behavior, Failure Patterns, and Evidentiary Considerations<\/h3>

Moisture-related failures typically develop over time rather than presenting as immediate or catastrophic events. Common indicators include hollow-sounding tile, darkening of stone, debonding, efflorescence, curling, and surface staining. These symptoms may resemble installation deficiencies, particularly in the absence of pre-installation moisture data.<\/p>

Substrate moisture (moisture within the substrate) can interfere with bond development. Moisture testing methods, including calcium chloride testing, in situ probes, and surface moisture mapping, provide objective data regarding substrate condition. Documentation of environmental conditions, curing periods, and site protection further supports interpretation of observed failures.<\/p>
